Women's soccer avenged an in-season loss to W&L with a 2-0 victory in the second round of NCAA tournament play on Sunday Nov. 15.

The Lynchburg College women's soccer team advanced through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament last weekend after they defeated Catholic University 5-1 on Saturday and Washington and Lee University 2-0 on Sunday.

LC jumped out to an early lead in their first round matchup with Catholic on Saturday as sophomore Joanie Snyder scored the game's first goal just over 10 minutes into the game, according to the LC Athletics website. LC kept the goals coming, adding scores from junior Betsy Kwiatkowski, freshman Jessie Gonzalez and sophomore Brittany Klippstein, to take a 4-1 lead entering halftime. Kwiatkowski finished up when she scored her second goal of the game on a breakaway in the second half giving LC a 5-1 lead that they would hold for the win and advance to the second round.

LC avenged their 2-1 loss to W&L, in the ODAC Tournament, by knocking W&L out of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 victory over them in the second round on Sunday. LC was led by freshman Shelley and senior Ashley Hoath as they scored the game's only two goals. Shelley scored the game's first goal just over 23 minutes into the game off an assist from Kwiatkowski an LC took a 1-0 lead into halftime, according to the ODAC website. Ashley Hoath gave LC some insurance at the 62:09 mark when she scored for LC, giving them a 2-0 that they held for the win. The 2-0 win was junior goalkeeper Anna Wright's 10th shutout of the season and secured the team's third trip to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament in the past three years. The team will face Concordia College of Moorehead Minn. next Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.

The LC men's soccer team also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last weekend, but were eliminated in the second round when Christopher Newport University outscored LC 4-3 in penalty kicks on Sunday night. The second round game against CNU started well as LC junior Michael Abbonizio scored just 44 seconds into the game, according to the LC Athletics website. LC held that 1-0 lead until there was just over two minutes left to play when CNU's Cliff Kipper scored a goal to even the score. The score remained tied 1-1 through two overtime periods and the game was forced into penalty kicks where CNU got the best of LC 4-3.

LC men's soccer may have been knocked out of the NCAA Tournament Sunday night, but their 3-0 victory over Catholic University on Saturday was the team's first ever NCAA Tournament win, according to the LC Athletics website. Abbonizio also scored in the first minute of the first round game for LC when he converted on a pass from senior Josh Reed for the game's first goal just 35 seconds into the game. Senior Shawn Bender scored another goal for LC later in the half to send the team into halftime leading Catholic 2-0. Junior Hunter Smith finished the scoring in the second half posting the game's last goal in the 51st minute.

LC men's soccer ends the season as ODAC champions with a record of 17-2-3 and recorded the team's first NCAA Tournament win. LC women's soccer, already with two in this years NCAA Tournament wins will look to extend its run at the national championship when they take on Concordia College in the Sweet 16 this Saturday.
