"It was more of an information sharing time where campuses were talking a little bit about what they were doing, what they were looking at. We decided that there would be a small task force because there's 27 schools in this thing, of six that would review what the CDC is saying on a, well now what is a daily basis, and touch base and kind of continue the conversation going," Vice President and Dean for Student Development John Eccles said.
LC will be a part of that task force and is monitoring the situation very closely, Eccles said. LC also has a contingency plan in place if an outbreak were to take place locally.
One issue discussed by the CICV was upcoming educational programs abroad. The CDC released a warning that urges Americans to "avoid nonessential travel to Mexico." No other travel warnings have been issued, but the CDC will continue to evaluate the situation. LC had planned a summer language immersion program in Guanajuato, Mexico, but it was canceled earlier in the semester because of low enrollment, Off-Campus Studies Director Christian Wilwohl said in an e-mail.
Other study abroad programs this summer will be to St. Lucia, China, Turkey, Greece and South Korea.
"At the moment, the swine flu outbreak has not affected the study abroad programs for this summer. We are carefully monitoring the situation and will take all precautions if necessary. Other colleges and universities have cancelled programs to Mexico as result of the grave health risk," Wilwohl said in the e-mail.
For other students who have plans for international travel this summer, Scruggs suggests that students research their destination before their vacation. Travel warnings can be found at cdc.gov/travel.
Students who have other concerns about the swine flu should visit cdc.gov or who.int, Eccles said.
