The Year of the Citizen continued in full swing as Lynchburg College held elections for Student Government Association officers.

Students voted March 2 through March 4 for SGA President and Vice President, class officers and class representatives online via myLC. However, the only position that faced an opponent was the Class of 2010 secretary. All other candidates ran unopposed. Five positions were vacant of candidates.

SGA candidates are senior Patrick Durany for president and junior Kathryn McDaniel for vice president. Class of 2010 candidates are junior Rebecca Maier for president, senior Laura Davis for vice president, junior Chris Meadows for treasurer and senior Carolyn Walsh will oppose junior Dana Esposito for secretary. Class of 2011 candidates are sophomores Melissa Richards for president, Dianna Borow for vice president and Sarah Grieves for treasurer. There is no candidate for the position of secretary. For the Class of 2012, no one has turned in any information and therefore is not eligible to run for a class officer position, senior and former Appeals Board Chair Ashley Sellers said.

Sellers is in charge of the elections and thinks the student body does not take elections seriously.

"I think one of the biggest problems we face during election time is that the campus generally views SGA as something minor, not necessarily an influential organization at LC… SGA has access to President Garren, Dean Eccles and the College Board of Trustees--all of whom have proven multiple times that they listen to what Student Government has to say about the campus," Sellers said in an e-mail.

Vice President and Dean for Student Development John Eccles currently serves as faculty advisor to SGA and the freshman, sophomore and junior classes. Eccles stepped in to fill the role for the 2008-2009 school year after a vacancy in the Office of Student Activities, and has found that serving as advisor has been an educational and enjoyable experience.

"I think it's been beneficial both ways… because I'm sitting there listening to 25, 30 students every week talk about their life and Lynchburg College and that's kind of what I do. That's my job. I really feel like it was really interesting to give direct feedback, to be a part of what they were thinking directly and in such a structured manner," Eccles said.
