The Hornets men's soccer team showed off for the visiting families of Lynchburg College's Open House this past Saturday when they defeated the Wasps from Emory-Henry College, 4-0.
Cam Smith (Goode, Va.) jumpstarted the Hornet lead in the first half when he assisted teammate Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, Pa.) to score the first goal of the game at 21:57.
With a 1-0 lead coming out of the first half Abbonizio stung the Wasps again when he made an unassisted goal at 55:59 in the second half. A few minutes later, Ryan Renfro (Forest, Va.) assisted Josh Reed (Newark, De.) with another goal giving the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Hornets' Pat Brown (Williamsburg, Va.), affirmed the Hornet victory at 64:33 when he scored the second unassisted goal of the game.
Before the game, Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, Va.), predicted a good outcome for this game.
"I feel confident going into this game. We have had a good season so far with a 6-2 record," Bender said.
LC senior Josh Parman enjoyed watching the game despite the drizzling rain. He shared Bender's confidence.
"As usual, the Hornets let their cleats do the talking," Parman said.
Katie Davidson, another senior at LC, is an enthusiastic fan of the men's soccer team and even entitled Abbonizio as the "God of the goals."
The final report of the game had Lynchburg College with an overwhelming 30 shots and five saves by goalie Matt Surdivant (Bear, De.). Emory-Henry tallied 10 shots and an impressive 10 saves.
