In March of 2008 Lynchburg College launched the Hornet Highway, a website specifically designed to help the sophomores with the "sophomore slump."
Jessica Baldwin, Director of Learning Resources, defines the sophomore slump as, "the gap between the excitement and transition of freshman year to finding where you want to go academically."
Baldwin also said that the sophomore year is more about defining oneself academically. For sophomores who haven't declared a major, it's about feeling comfortable finding their academic path.
The Hornet Highway is an online community made exclusively for sophomores. On the website students can interact with one another and discuss the hardships of sophomore year. There are also two student bloggers who blog on the Hornet Highway to give sophomores a taste of experiences other students have had while at LC, as well as give some advice to those who might need it. Along with interacting with other students there are articles and surveys to help students decide the person that they want to become while at Lynchburg College.
The Hornet Highway is important for the sophomores at Lynchburg College because it allows the students to gain access and knowledge about the sophomore year. It also allows the faculty and staff to reach out to the class of 2011 to help them with their academic life.
Jessica Baldwin hopes that with the creation of the Hornet Highway that the faculty and staff will be able to gain more knowledge about the sophomore year of college and what students need and want in order to be successful. According to Baldwin, there are currently 237 students registered on the Hornet Highway and within the next year Lynchburg College hopes to increase that number. If you are in the class of 2011 and you are not registered on the Hornet Highway you can do so at www.hornethighway.org
