Some of you may recognize Cartel from when their hit single "Honestly" was played on ESPN's March Madness during game breaks. Others may know them from when they won Yahoo! Music's "Who's Next?" competition and AOL's "Breaker" artist competition. If you have not heard of them, then you will get the chance to meet them on April 14 during LC's Spring Fling.
How did Lynchburg College get Cartel to come here? Bradley Stevenson of SAB is the head hauncho in charge of booking performances each year. He is the Mainstage Chair for the Student Activities Board, and last semester he brought Brand New to LC for the college's biggest concert ever. According to Stevenson, however, Cartel was more difficult to obtain.
"Cartel was on my top ten lists. Originally they couldn't come on our first date, so then we moved it and they said it would work," Stevenson said.
The Spring Fling concert will take place in front of Centennial Hall. SAB is expecting a bigger turnout then last year.
"They [Cartel] are selling out 1000+ venues and selling hundreds of thousands of records. This year we stepped up the caliber of bands and the other novelties/activities," Stevenson said.
Chris Meadows, a freshman here at LC, was at the 9:30 club a couple weeks ago when the band took the stage.
"Cartel wasn't as good as some other bands due to the fact that their songs have the same sound. It makes it seem like you're listening to one LONG song," Meadows said.
But when asked whether people will come, Meadows did say "yeah people will def come see them. I know a lot of people who like them."
Senior DJ Brown is planning on attending the concert.
"I like mostly their music, and when I say music, I don't refer to lyrics, but the actual melody, notes, and instruments," Brown said.
Two other artists will also be playing at Spring Fling. Holiday Parade and Dangerous Summer will kick off the concert. They are rather unknown, but can be found via Myspace, along with Cartel.
The Spring Fling will have activities other than the live concert. According to the Facebook announcement a "caricature artist, Henna Tattoo artist, Psychic Reader, Dance Heads novelties, Photo Dog Tag, Sand Bottle Art, Build-A-Bear, and other inflatables and rides" will be there. Doors will open at 2 p.m. and the caf dinner will be served outside that evening.
